Mewang Gewog

Mewang Gewog is one of the five gewogs under Thimphu Dzongkhag, located in the southern and southwestern part of the district. It is known for its fertile valleys, beautiful paddy fields, and its proximity to the capital, which influences both its development and lifestyle.

Brief Background of the Gewog:

Mewang Gewog lies close to Thimphu Thromde, bordering it on the northern side and stretching towards the Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag in the south. The gewog consists of several villages nestled along the Wang Chhu river valley, where agriculture remains the main source of livelihood, especially paddy cultivation and vegetable farming. Due to its strategic location, parts of Mewang Gewog have seen gradual development and semi-urbanization. Despite this, the gewog retains its rural charm, with traditional houses, monasteries, and community lhakhangs (temples). Mewang is also culturally rich, celebrating local festivals and maintaining age-old customs that are deeply rooted in Bhutanese tradition.
