Phajoding Hike
The Phajoding Hike is one of Thimphu’s most rewarding day hikes, leading to the historic Phajoding Monastery, a sacred site perched at around 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) above sea level. Steeped in spiritual significance, the monastery complex was founded in the 13th century by the revered Tibetan saint Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, who introduced the Drukpa Kagyu tradition of Buddhism to Bhutan.
The trail begins above the Takin Preserve area and winds steadily uphill through fragrant pine and rhododendron forests, dotted with prayer flags, small chortens, and meditation huts used by monks in retreat. Along the way, hikers are treated to sweeping views of Thimphu valley below, which become especially magical as the trail ascends.
The hike usually takes around 3–4 hours one way, depending on pace and fitness level. At the top, visitors are welcomed by the peaceful monastery complex, including ancient temples and retreat houses, still actively used by monks today. The cool mountain air, coupled with the serene spiritual ambiance, makes Phajoding a perfect blend of physical adventure and quiet reflection.
Considered moderately challenging due to its elevation gain, the Phajoding Hike is popular among locals and visitors alike, offering a chance to experience Bhutan’s rich spiritual heritage surrounded by untouched natural beauty.
